“The Barn could not have been a more perfect venue for our wedding reception. We wanted a venue that was beautiful, different, and allowed us to have the wedding we wanted. The barn itself is a stunning beamed building with need for little decoration and floor to ceiling windows. We chose to have the DJ on the gallery leaving plenty of space for 10 tables. The covered courtyard made for a fantastic welcome drinks, bar and buffet area and although we were very lucky with the weather it would still have worked perfectly if it had rained. The icing on the cake for us was the Hayloft, where we stayed for our wedding night – a perfect venue for the perfect wedding day”

Nina and Aaron

September 3rd 2011 was a glorious late summer’s day for Nina and Aaron’s wedding party at the Barn, and the party arrived from Church to an enticing welcome ………..

The kissing booth was open for business from the start, and in the glorious early September sunshine little excuse for romantic behaviour was needed. The booth was built by the groom himself, and the candyfloss theme worked perfectly throughout.

Guests enjoyed drinks in the courtyard before going through to the Barn for the wedding breakfast.

The wet nose belongs to the house labrador at Clopton barn and the wigs and corsets came with the showcase of ‘Ipso Facto’, a new musical play based on a Henry Fielding original, which rehearsed here in April 2010.

Traditional Suffolk barns make great perfomance spaces but these buildings have been transformed by owner Jane Stevensen into something very special.

Light pours in to the main space through a huge glazed (and insulated) entrance, the acoustics are good, there is cosy underfloor heating, courtyard space outside in which to run through lines or just take a much neeed coffee break, a kitchen area, toilets, parking and even a minstrels gallery.

For our purposes it was a perfect solution; the costume designer could live ‘above the shop’ in the equally smart hayloft conversion and when Jane offered use of the adjacent old chapel, no less, as the production wardrobe, we felt we had really taken over.

Highly recommended as a quality and practical working space for artists, musicians and actors. Dancers will need a harlequin floor or equivalent over the – very expensive – stone!

A week of occasional flashes of hot sun but there’s been some torrential rain and with the wind starting to blow leaves around it’s already feeling autumnal, not like mid-August at all. However, there is an upside; the hedgerows that line our footpaths are full of bounty – damsons, sloes and the best blackberry harvest for years.

The daily dog walk is now a foraging expedition; and much in mind are next month’s events in the Barn, including the world’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support – so some homemade Barn produce will help the fund-raising along. Put Friday 30th September in your diary now, and come along to the barn for coffee, cake and blackberry jam.

Blackberry picking by Seamus Heaney

Late August, given heavy rain and sun
For a full week, the blackberries would ripen.
At first, just one, a glossy purple clot
Among others, red, green, hard as a knot.
You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet
Like thickened wine: summer's blood was in it
Leaving stains upon the tongue and lust for
Picking. Then red ones inked up and that hunger
Sent us out with milk cans, pea tins, jam-pots
Where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our boots.
Round hayfields, cornfields and potato-drills
We trekked and picked until the cans were full,
Until the tinkling bottom had been covered
With green ones, and on top big dark blobs burned
Like a plate of eyes. Our hands were peppered
With thorn pricks, our palms sticky as Bluebeard's.

We hoarded the fresh berries in the byre.
But when the bath was filled we found a fur,
A rat-grey fungus, glutting on our cache.
The juice was stinking too. Once off the bush
The fruit fermented, the sweet flesh would turn sour.
I always felt like crying. It wasn't fair
That all the lovely canfuls smelt of rot.
Each year I hoped they'd keep, knew they would not.

Book clubs, reading groups, creative writing workshops – the Barn is the perfect place to nurture and develop ideas. With its tranquil atmosphere and flexible space it’s an inspiring location. Groups can work together in the light-filled barn itself, and on the upper level there’s the book lined gallery providing a more intimate setting for developing ideas or working independently.

The Knot Garden

Finding a good place to write is a very personal thing; for Virginia Woolf it was of course a room of of her own, J K Rowling chose a busy cafe, Thomas Mann needed a wicker chair by the sea. Here at the Barn there’s not only the interior space with all it has to offer, but also wonderful gardens where you will come across benches and seats in shady corners and sunny spots, perhaps beside a quiet pool or in the Elizabethan knot garden, providing a place to sit and contemplate, to nurture the muse and find inspiration.

Literary festivals and author events are popping up everywhere – Suffolk of course has its own annual Aldeburgh Literary Festival in March each year, and the Ip-Art Festival is currently in full swing with all sorts of writers events and showcasing its prestigious New Angle Literary Award which focuses on writing inspired by East Anglia. This year’s shortlisted authors include Ronald Blythe, Maggi Hambling and Blake Morrison (www.ip-art.com).

The Barn is a superb venue for all things creative; why not book it for your next gathering?

Over the weekend of 18-19 September 2010 art lovers flooded to the Barn to see a great show from the Re+new gallery in Woodbridge. The fine, dry weather was a boon, and a steady stream of visitors enjoyed the eclectic selection of work on show. Striking paintings by Dom Pattinson and Hugh Webster led you in to the main space, where paintings, drawings, sculptures and furniture from a broad spectrum of both well known and up and coming artists were displayed in the stunning setting. The space was beautifully lit with natural light streaming in from the floor to ceiling glazing, and clever use of hi-tech lighting enhanced the effect.

For Geoff Witts, owner of Re+New, it was his best show yet, and we look forward to welcoming him back next year for what is becoming an annual event at the Barn.
